God has called us to go beyond the walls of our church buildings and reach out to the neighborhoods around us. To lift up our community and be a light for the people closest to us. People who are in need of the kindness, mercy and compassion of Jesus. To share with them that there is Good News. Here are some ways for you to reach locally.

 

Mary’s Mission

Purpose: Help persons in need of assistance during illness or who can no longer drive, respite, home visitation.
Responsibilities: Referrals to Apple Country for transportation; prepare and deliver meals; phone calls to keep in touch; referrals to agencies.
Helpful Attributes: Patience and compassion. Experience with elderly or nursing experience helpful.

Good Samaritan/Samaritan's Attic

Purpose: Provide material assistance to the poor in Henderson County.
Responsibilities: Receive good-condition furniture and household items; distribute to the needy. Collect and distribute blankets and warm jackets, as well as Christmas and Three Kings gifts to the needy.
Helpful Attributes: Organizational skills & muscles.

Street Evangelization

Purpose: Bring Jesus’ love to those in need by taking our Catholic faith out into the world. Grow in our own relationship with the Lord. Share Catholic truth with those who are open. Join with other Christians in sharing the Good News.
Responsibilities: Prepare ourselves by being in a relationship with the Lord, by knowing our faith, by bringing Jesus’ love and compassion to others, by listening rather than preaching, by employing the Spirit through prayer and by surrendering to God’s will rather than having personal goals. Find places in the community where we can be present and invite engagement. We set up on street corners on Main Street. We sign up for booths during major events like the Apple Festival and Farm City Day. We try to create other opportunities such as provide caroling during the Christmas season. We would like to be present at other venues, such as college campus activities.
Helpful Attributes: Be a practicing Catholic. Have a relationship with Jesus. (We cannot give what we do not have.) Be comfortable with your level of faith knowledge. Be prayerful and willing to trust the Spirit to guide you. You will never go out alone, always with an appropriate team member.

Feed the Kids

Purpose: Working with several church communities in the area to provide a nourishing meal on Friday evenings to the children attending the Boys and Girls Club.
Responsibilities: to plan, shop, prepare, cook and serve a meal at the Boys and Girls Club 16 times a year.
Helpful Attributes: Enjoys working as a team cooking, serving and transporting a meal and enjoys seeing the children enjoy.
Time: Each person works about 8 times a year - Cooks work about 3 to 6 hrs, servers about 1 ½ hrs and transporters about 1hr. Instruction on food handling and sanitation will be provided.

Ecumenism

Purpose: Promote dialogue with other religious denominations and share a clear understanding of our Catholic faith with them by active participation in Henderson County Churches Uniting, Lutheran/Roman Catholic Covenant Group multidenominational prayer services, seminars, and pulpit exchanges.
Time: 6-8 hours several times a year

Interfaith Assistance Ministry (IAM)

Purpose: Offer emergency funds, food, clothing and referrals to other community agencies to clients in crisis.
Responsibilities: Gather and verify information from clients to determine eligibility for assistance. Provide clients with an array of services to meet their needs, including referral to other agencies.
Helpful Attributes: Compassion, good communication skills, a desire to help Henderson County residents in crisis. Responsible for maintaining client confidentiality. Computer skills required in some areas.
Time: Four hours, one day per week. Mandatory participation in continuing education programs held twice a year.

Prison Ministry

Purpose: Bring prisoners/inmates face-to-face with Our Lord Jesus by providing a compassionate ear and sharing the Good News.
Responsibilities: Parishioners visit inmates in the Henderson County Detention Center at the times allotted to the parish. Depending on our resources, we may also serve those in need in other ways, such as providing assistance to families and loved ones of inmates, and by visiting other jails and prisons in the surrounding area.
Helpful Attributes: Be a practicing Catholic. Have a relationship with Jesus. (We cannot give what we do not have.) Be comfortable with your level of faith knowledge. Be prayerful and willing to trust the Spirit to guide you. Have a heart for our incarcerated brothers and sisters. Be able to pass background checks – required by Diocese and County Sheriff.
Time: Members visit inmates by sign-up as scheduled. These visits last about two hours. Visiting hours and dates: every Monday and Tuesday at 7pm; the second Wednesday of each month at 9:30am. The ministry meets in the parish office are once a month on the last Tuesday of the month at 7pm to provide an opportunity to conduct business, share experiences and orient new members.

Ministry to the Sick and Homebound

Purpose: Bring the Blessed Sacrament to those hospitalized, homebound, in nursing homes or assisted living facilities.
Responsibilities: Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, who volunteer for this ministry, are trained to minister to the sick and homebound.
Helpful Attributes: A fervent respect for the Sacrament and a desire to help those who cannot come to church.
Time: Several hours, 1-2 days a week with individual instruction as needed. Background check required.
